First of all, I do not remember my own primary school graduation. At all. I do remember leaving kindy, when we were basically "thrown out". That was pretty fun but ironic, since I never had such a close connection to kindy as I did to elementary school. Having the same teacher for four years was very special and I think we were special to her, too. After all we were with her on her fiftieth birthday and we were her class when she suffered a horrible loss. When I went back to visit her years after, around carnival she still used the tiger masks we had crafted and I saw all my class mates names on them. I also remember walking through school with her and suddenly feeling sick. I ran to the bathroom and, well, you know what happened and she stormed after me and held my hair. She was a very special woman and I will never forget her and the memories she made possible (believe me, I could keep going for ages). Yet, I have no remembrance of my last day at school.
This is the first thing that threw me off with the whole graduation. They still have a whole week of school to go! Those days of still having to learn and so on will just ruin the epic feeling from tonight, that they visibly felt (more to that later). Apparently most students won't even show up anymore. Does not make sense to me at all!
Then when I got there I felt like I entered a mini prom. 11 and 12 year old girls in heels, with shimmering dresses, high low cuts, way too short skirts and make up on. I mean come one! Take your time growing up. That stuff doesn't even look good on you yet. (More on the quick growing up later.) The boys were pretty fine. What can you do wrong with a vest, a shirt, or a nice t-shirt? Nothing really, for boys it's so easy.
They also were the best part of the whole boring ceremony, just the way boys always make things funnier and more casual. The director held the worst speech I ever heard. He had his notes, which he obviously didn't practice very well, because he stumbled about ten times within 5 minutes. The kids' apparently favorite teacher, however, held a flaming short speech with no notes and spontaneously. He even got their "We love you" in the end. No, not you principal! Sit down again, your speech was bad.
Then chosen groups of two or three people held speeches on each year they spent at primary school, based on anecdotes and very personal events. Again, the boys, which sadly there were only two groups, were the most entertaining and true. Did you ever notice, that when a girl presents something, it has to be great to be great? But when a boy does something, if it's bad, it's funny and still great. Anyway, the guys made everyone laugh during the ceremony.
While getting their certificates most kids just tried to get it over with, making it impossible for their proud parents to take a decent picture, without the back turned towards them (while shaking teacher's hands), hair in their face or the heads pointing towards the floor. Animated by said teachers, some of them (mainly boys of course) did a quick funny pose for neat shots and earned appreciative laughter.
By the end of this I was bored out of my pants. Then the year six band got to play a song and I was all ears again! Armed with a few guitars, a base, a key board, drums and two singers they performed Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. Whatever it has to do with their graduation, it certainly is a powerful very dramatic song and I enjoyed it a lot! Sadly that was the only one they got to play and after the whole grade performed a horrible dance to Katy Perry's Roar. It's just so sad how sometimes teachers ruin what could be great recordings. In no way did the movements match the catchy and powerful song, but were slow, out of rhythm and not capturing at all. The year threes including James at Nedlands Primary did a much nicer performance of a seventies dance in all their temporary gear.
We actually took a lot of nice photos today, but Halia doesn't like her and the kids on the internet, so this is the Teddychris.
Luckily after this downing end of the ceremony the kids got to live up to their full potential in a kids' disco! I must say I was not very keen on staying in the beginning. Their music was pretty nice though and I enjoyed watching all the kids grove around and have fun. Now we are getting to all the "I will explain later" comments. Some of the girls were twerking harder than I have ever seen in a real club! Shaking, shaking. Sorry, how old are you again? That proved to be a quite scary site and some of the song choices, made by teachers, I found absolutely inappropriate. The first one was Blurred Lines. Yes, it is a catchy song, but it's about all matters except child friendliness! Another one upset much more than that - We can't stop by Miley Cyrus. Now, everyone knows she used to be a Disney child star and many kids looked up to her and now she has gone all crazy, being naked all the time, sticking her tongue out and twerking like her life depends on it. Yes, we understand that Miley is not Hannah Montana, and that kids need to understand that too. And yes, most of those children knew the song. A song with the worst music video I have ever seen. Humping an entire room, smoking weed, fake chopping off of fingers which extract pink goo? Those are just some of the idiot inappropriate happenings in her video, which clearly sends the wrong message. I suppose it's hard to stop children from watching and listening to this stuff at home, but do we really need to carelessly play these songs at an elementary school event, pretty much saying the message of those media is supported and alright? I think not. Sorry for the short drift off, but I had to get it out there!
Now we can proceed to the neat ending of the evening. After a full glass of champagne I got my dance moves out with Luey and Stefan a little further away from the main floor, where we got a lot of happy and judgemental stares while busting moves to Treasure!! It's a good song and it was a lot of fun to finally sort of connect with the boys. I just realized I am still wearing Luey's hat, that Stefan wore today and that actually is Chris'. So the day ended on a quite nice notion after all.
My graduation might have been equally as boring, so I am sorry for whoever had to live through it :)
If you want to check out Miley Cyrus to know what I am talking about.
We can't stop I purposely did not use a youtube link so I hope people in Germany can still watch this and not be blocked by the GEMA. After this you might know why I got upset.
For the Parody it is important that you see at least the beginning of the real video first and listen to the lyrics closely so it makes sense.
Eyes open!
Skipper
